Don’t Get Separated! How to Use Your Paddleboard Ankle Leash
Ankle leashes are essential safety gear for paddleboarders. They prevent your board from drifting away if you fall off, ensuring you can easily climb back on. While not legally mandated, an ankle leash is a no-brainer for a safe and enjoyable paddling experience.
Leash Types: Coiled vs. Straight
There are two main types of leashes to consider:
Coiled Leash:
This is the most common type of leash for flatwater paddling like on rivers or lakes. The coiled design prevents excess slack from dragging in the water, reducing the risk of tripping or entanglement. This is the best option for flat water paddling.
Straight Leash:
Straight leashes are ideal for surf paddling where you want to avoid the leash pulling the board back towards you after a fall.
Attaching the Ankle Leash to Your Board
The attachment process might differ slightly depending on your board type (solid vs. inflatable). Here’s a general guide:
Solid Paddleboard:
- Leash Plug: Most solid paddleboards come with a built-in leash plug at the tail end.
- Leash Tie: Your leash will likely have a separate leash tie that gets attached to the board permanently.
- Secure the Leash Tie: Thread the leash tie under the leash plug and tie it securely. This leash tie should remain on the board at all times.
- Attach the Leash: Open the velcro strap on the leash and loop it around the leash plug. Tighten the strap and secure the velcro closure.
Inflatable Paddleboard:
- D-Ring: Inflatable boards typically have a D-ring at the tail instead of a leash plug.
- Leash Tie: Similar to solid boards, use the leash tie and securely fasten it to the D-ring. This tie should also stay on the board permanently.
- Attach the Leash: Wrap the leash’s velcro strap around the D-ring, tighten it snugly, and secure the velcro closure.
Wearing the Leash
- Wear it: Wrap the comfortable neoprene ankle cuff around your ankle. Choose a snug but comfortable fit.
- Leash Care: After use, rinse your leash with fresh water to remove salt or dirt. Allow it to dry completely before storing.
Leash Safety Tip
When you fall off your board, remember to pull the leash cord back up onto the board to prevent it from getting tangled in the fins or caught on underwater obstacles.
By using an ankle leash properly, you can paddle with confidence, knowing your board is always within reach in case of a fall. So leash up and have fun exploring the water!
