5 Reasons to Try SUP Yoga
The Challenge
“Challenges are what make life meaningful” Don’t be afraid to take a step out of your comfort zone. Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga is not only a challenge on your physical practice(asana) but it also requires you to increase your awareness and mindfulness. Even for advanced yogis, taking your practice to the water will shine light on your routine in a whole new way. Let go of fear. What’s the worst that could happen?
Improved Balance
As you can imagine SUP Yoga will require more balance then yoga on land. Poses that may seem pretty easy on land will feel completely different on your board, but that’s not a bad thing! Improving your balance is beneficial for joint stability and coordination. When you first start out it is okay to stick with poses that keep your center of gravity low, and close to the middle of the board. The more points of contact you have, the more stable you will feel.
Connecting with Nature
There is nothing better for the soul then connecting with nature, unplugging from reality and enjoying the beauty of our surroundings. During a morning or evening SUP yoga session you have the opportunity to do just that. Listening to the birds chirping and the water moving beneath the board helps us relax and truly be in the moment. Reap the benefits of being outside, and try something new and adventurous!
Core Strength
We have all heard about how important it is to develop our core strength, right? Well, it’s true. I’m talking about more than just your six pack. Core strength is much deeper than that, literally. It involves all the muscles in your pelvis, surrounding your spine, and up your sides. All yoga poses done on a paddleboard require more core engagement than the same poses done on land. We rely on our core strength to keep us balanced while we are out on the water and the constant engagement is beneficial is developing and strengthening our core.
Best Savasana you will ever experience
“Breathing in relaxation, breathing out tension” If you have not experienced savasana on a paddleboard, you are seriously missing out! Ask anyone who has tried and they will tell you that it is the best savasana they have ever had. I could go into great detail on how and why it is so amazing but you are better off experiencing it for yourself. Give it a try, you won’t regret it.
Will you be offering SUP yoga this summer? If so, how do I register?
As of now we won’t be offering any paddleboard yoga classes this summer. However, we are planning to create a paddleboard yoga resource that you’ll be able to use! Stay tuned for that!
